What if the shift crosses midnight?

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as overnight and the span runs into the next day.

Does this apply a legal break?

No. Break rules differ by country. Paid time is the span minus the unpaid break you enter.

What if the start and end are the same?

The span is zero. A 24-hour shift needs an end time one minute before the start, or the times need to differ.
